After completing her residency in 2018, Afrah moved to Baltimore and joined the University of Maryland School Of Medicine as a Clinical Instructor. Interested in simulation and medical education, she then completed a clinical simulation fellowship at the University of Maryland Medical Center. She is presently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and works clinically at their Midtown Campus site, where she is the director of the Emergency Medicine Rotation for internal medicine, transitional, and emergency medicine rotating residents. In addition to simulation, her interests include resuscitation, life threatening rashes, and psychiatric emergencies.
Since completion of her fellowship, Afrah has played an integral role in simulation education for both the emergency medicine and internal medicine residency programs. She is the Director of the Simulation Resuscitation Course for the internal medicine residents, which helps prepare the Rapid Response Team for critical events in the hospital. In addition, she is the Co-director for several courses in the University of Maryland School of Medicine, developing and implementing educational curricula for medical students.
Afrah’s research focus is studying the importance of simulation in assessment and education of trainees. She was recently the recipient of the Young Investigator Award by the American Heart Association for her abstract: Simulation Based Assessment of Trainee’s Performance in Post-Cardiac Arrest Resuscitation. She has also authored multiple book chapters related to education.
In addition, Afrah participated in the American Academy of Emergency Medicine Speaker Development Group and subsequently has had opportunities to speak at national and international educational conferences on topics including life threatening rashes, psychiatric emergencies, and simulation. An ardent advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion in medicine, she also gave a virtual presentation for FemInEm in 2020 titled “What’s in a name ...” that was attended by several of our women faculty and residents!
In her free time, Afrah enjoys traveling, hiking, and playing her Nintendo.
